Tiling is a great way to pretty up floors, pavements, walls and kitchen back-splashes. The application stage plays a major role on how well the tiles are laid. So if the adhesive is chosen, mixed and applied correctly, your tiling will be outstanding!
This article will give you information and tips on how to apply tiling adhesive correctly.
Picking the right adhesive
This is a very important step before tiling. Know what kind of surface you are attempting to tile on, the size and material of your tiles, and the kind of area you are tiling(outdoor, indoor, indoor but wet, etc.). If required ask for a tiling professional’s help. Resist from trying to use the cheapest adhesive in the market. Some factors you might want to consider when choosing an adhesive are – the colour of the adhesive especially if you are using white tiling and the bond strength.
Mixing the adhesive
Mixing ratios are different for different adhesives, and different surfaces, so follow the instructions on your adhesive package carefully. Also, remember to mix in smaller quantities, rather than all at once because as work progresses, you will be able to gauge quantities better. Use a clean container to mix your adhesive in, and measure the quantities accurately. Use the mixer attachment on a power drill on medium speed for thorough and smooth mixing without lumps. You need to rest the mixture for a few minutes.
It helps to use the right-sized trowel for applying adhesive. Use a gauging trowel to scoop out and transfer adhesive from your mixing bowl to the surface. Then, use a notched trowel to make the required ridged depth for application. For a guide on the type of trowel, check the manufacturer’s instructions on the adhesive packaging. Apply the adhesive in a light swirling motion, covering a limited area at a time. When the adhesive has been spread over the surface, affix a tile and press evenly so that the entire tile makes good contact with the adhesive below it.
Tips for applying adhesive correctly
Adhere onto a clean and dry surface, as well as clean and dry tiles. If your tile has a thin adhesive skin (possibly from a previous tile laying abandonment) then do not use that tile.
- Ensure the surface has been prepared properly i.e. it is even, and has no leftover traces of oils, dampness, chemicals, etc.
- Every now and then, lift a tile off the adhesive (before it has set) to ensure that the entire back surface of the tile is covered by the adhesive. Fix back carefully and press.
- Follow the right tiling direction procedure. For instance, for wall tiling, apply top-down, while for a floor tiling, it helps to start from the middle of the room.
- Always wait until the adhesive has dried completely before you begin to grout.
