Warning signs that your home needs general repairs and waterproofing

Your house is the roof over your head, so you want that as strong as ever. Foundation problems may mean expensive repairs. Here’s what to look for to keep small concerns from becoming big headaches. Knowing the early warning signs of foundation troubles can head off problems that ultimately could cost tens of lakhs of rupees to fix. The sooner you identify potential problems, the easier and less expensive it is to fix them. If you have a maintenance committee in your building or complex, encourage them to fix structural changes on priority if they are needed. This way you are not only putting your family out of danger but also averting a big accident. Hence don’t wait for the BMC to send you a notice before you take action, here are the red flags that you should look out for.

  • If you have wall paper on your walls and you see light creases and wrinkles. This is due to the wall shifting as a result of foundation problems, the wallpaper will also shift, causing it to separate or rip.

  • Cracks in the interior walls on the dry wall as well as cracks on the outside of your home, such as zig-zag cracks in a brick wall. This is another sure sign of house settlement. • The chajja and balcony of your building have developed cracks on the surface. The chajja and balcony are one of the most prominent areas from where rainwater seeps inside the house ruining the interior décor and affecting the foundation. The chajja and balcony are to be repaired with Dr. Fixit Pidicrete URP, a polymer modified mortar.
  • Balconies have been pulled away from your home.
  • Small gaps near the head of nails. Nails pop and you can see small, cracked circles where the nail pulls away from the drywall or sheet rock, exposing the nail head or pushing paint away from the wall.
  • Sloping of floors. Incremental drops of an inch across a home’s foundation are not a problem. But if your home slopes more than an inch every 15 to 20 feet, then you have some sloping issues that may require foundation repair.
