Swimming Pool Tiling and Grouting Basics

Swimming pools are very popular extensions of homes and institutions these days. However, they need to be built with the best possible materials, with the right techniques, and waterproofed properly. This will ensure that the structure is durable, and long lasting. Swimming pools need to be watertight outside, while the tiling inside needs to be waterproofed. Today let’s explore waterproofing the inside of a swimming pool, with a special emphasis on tiling.

Surface Preparation
Thoroughly clean the surface, preferably with water pressure cleaning, sand blasting, or a similar technique so that it is completely free of loose particles or dirt which could hamper the application of the waterproofing mortar. Continue preparing the surface for tile application using a glass fibre mesh as a reinforcing strip, with polymer modified cement coatings. The last application can be reinforced with sand so that it is more receptive of the adhesive layers to follow. Finally, wrap the inserts with a bath seal tape to ensure a water-tight fitting. After you do the grouting for accessories like light fitting casings, pipes, etc., your surface is ready for tiling.

Tiling
There are a number of beautiful tiling options available for swimming pools. When tiling, ensure you choose the right kind of tile based on whether it is a public or private swimming pool, the usage, and the demographics of users. You can choose between glass, mosaics and ceramics.

You must remember that you will need to use an appropriate grouting for the tile medium you choose. These days companies offer online calculators for estimating the amount of tiling adhesive you need to use, software to match tile and grout colour etc, ensuring that your swimming pool looks professionally-finished, and is tiled with the best products

Tiling Challenges
Tiling a swimming pool has to be done correctly as it’s a permanent water-immersed surface.

It is important to use a strong tiling adhesive which has superior bonding and flexibility. In addition, the grouting product should be a high quality one, and resistant to the wet-area challenges of a swimming pool!

Because of the permanent water-immersion, swimming pool tiles are submitted to water-pressure when the pool has water, and counter-pressure when it is emptied out for cleaning and maintenance. It is therefore important that the tile adhesive needs to be water-resistant, so that it adheres well under all conditions.

Grouting Challenges
Grouting is the mortar used for filling crevices, especially the gaps between wall or floor tiles. When grouting around swimming pool tiles, one has to be aware that-

The chlorine used in pools and the use of detergents directly impacts the durability of tile grouts. The choice of an appropriate chemical-resistant grout is important to build a long-lasting swimming-pool.

Certain parts of the pool are exposed to more aggressive conditions than others:

The grout on the pool sides at the waterline may be exposed to greater erosion from water movement.

Pool surrounds may undergo stringent and frequent cleaning regimes. This loosens the strength of grout.
