Keep A Check On Your Home’s Health

Annual health check-ups for yourself and your loved ones are a great way to bring attention to any potential health issues that might need a quick intervention. Likewise, your home’s health too needs a regular assessment to determine any underlying problems. A healthy house is clean, well-maintained, with a strong structure, good air quality, and proper ventilation. It is important to look for signs that indicate common areas of trouble that could jeopardize the overall health of your home. The sooner you spot the symptoms, the quicker you can address the underlying cause.

Termites
Termites might be small, but are an issue that needs immediate addressing. Left unchecked, they can cause significant structural damage to houses over time. Look for signs of termite infestation, like shelter tubes, wings, hollow sounds in wood, and termite droppings around the house to determine if you have an infestation. If you suspect that your home has these pests, call for professional help at the earliest.

Water Damage
Water-induced damage, or lack of sufficient maintenance can severely affect the health of your home. Apart from cracks and wall damage, unchecked leaks and improper waterproofing throughout the house can compromise its very structure. Every part of your home is vulnerable to the damaging force of water, and it’s essential to keep a check on any leakages, or signs of inadequate waterproofing. Timely check and repair of water leaks is extremely important, as the water may cause significant damage to internal structures and cause a significant amount of damage. Apart from potentially causing irreparable damage to various parts of your home, water damage can lead to serious health consequences by creating a damp atmosphere leading to mould, asbestos and mildew. The one visible effect of water seepage is the growth of mould on the damp patches in your home. This dark and musty-smelling mould aggravates and can even cause asthma, especially in young children. Mould can also be a health hazard if you have a weakened immune system and cause allergies and even lung inflammation.

Uneven Floors
There are many causes for uneven floors. While not all require immediate attention, it’s important to assess the underlying cause. Improper construction and a settling or water damaged foundation are among the most severe causes which require professional expertise to address the issue. In case of multi-storeyed buildings, sloping floors may indicate damage to the supporting beams or joists that are holding up or supporting the floor on a higher level.

Wall and Ceiling Cracks

Wall and ceiling cracks should constantly be monitored to ascertain if they are a result of natural ageing, or indicative of structural damage. Look for cracks above doorways or cracks that are accompanied by a sagging ceiling, as they are telltale signs of a serious problem that should be addressed as soon as possible. Wide, long and multiple cracks usually mean that there is a larger underlying problem.

Improper Ventilation
If one spot in your home is colder, warmer or more humid than another, you probably have poor ventilation that’s adversely affecting the airflow. This not only plays a role in the overall air quality, but also the temperature in each area. Improper ventilation can expose you to indoor air pollutants, harmful chemicals, and biological contaminants. Mould and mildew growth, stuffy air, and intense humidity are all signs of improper ventilation resulting in poor air quality.
