How to choose the perfect tile for your kitchen

Memories of food are nostalgic, and it binds a family like no other. The evenings spent whipping up my trademark brownie with my ten-year-old while the heady smell of dark chocolate engulfs the whole house is one memory that I will cherish forever. So, if you love to cook, nothing gets more personal than the kitchen in a house.

And talking about kitchens, don’t even get me started on the topic of tiles, please. We all have our visions of a dream kitchen drawn on the canvas when the house is under construction. With my eyes firmly set on those aqua-blue beauties that were akin to black pearls for me, I moved heaven and earth scouting every tile shop across the breadth of this country to find a vendor that would supply those tiles. I was often told, “ma’am, only brown and white shades sell, these are off-beat ones with no demand.” The tricky part, however, is choosing the right type of tile for your kitchen.

These five questions will help you make the right choice.

Know your kitchen tile: the tile market has kept its pace with technology and the market is flooded with several easy to maintain options. Glass tiles not only look elegant, they are easy to maintain as well. For the backsplash, you can go even with a lacquered glass fitted with a magnetic back. The advantage of this is that you can just stick the accessories on the backsplash, thereby removing the need to fit rods. Choose your tiles based on where you intend to apply them. Matt finish, anti-skid tiles are better suited for kitchen floors.

One size does not fit all: measure the area where you want to fix the tiles. Too big tiles over a smaller area will lead to wastage and not be pleasing to the eye.

Draw a budget: If I went after every tile I liked, at first sight, it would have left a huge dent in my savings account. Handmade tiles can be exorbitant. As with any housing project, it’s best to set a realistic budget and stick to it. I had time and perseverance on my side. This personal endeavour taught me to keep looking beyond the obvious; away from the retail outlets and reach out to the suppliers of commercial places directly. This worked like a charm at a price that fit my budget well.

What’s your cooking style? You are the best judge when it comes to the family’s cooking and eating habits. If you are into deep frying a couple of times a week, then you may want to settle for backsplash tiles with fewer grout lines and grooves; this will make it easy to clean and discourage dirt from settling.

black tiles in a kitchen

Colour matters: black tiles in a kitchen that get little natural light? Nah. Plain white tiles for a large kitchen that is flooded with natural light may not be a bad idea. But, here is your perfect canvas to go bold, so why restrict yourself.

Does it fit your decor: bohemian tiles for a modern, sophisticated kitchen may look out of place. Similarly, glass tiles in an otherwise rustic kitchen may fail to do the magic. Choose the tile’s colour and pattern that complements your décor. Tile options for your kitchen floor and backsplash are varied to suit one’s taste.
