Bathroom Waterproofing Mistakes

The bathroom is one area which is constantly exposed to water and moisture, which can lead to the build-up of dampness. In addition, any leakage or cracks and breaks in the tiles on the walls and floor can cause water to seep through and cause further damage. Waterproofing remains an essential element in the construction of the bathrooms and is best done during the construction phase itself.

If the waterproofing is not done right it can lead to several problems, which can become expensive and difficult to treat at a later stage. Some of the most common bathroom waterproofing mistakes are listed here:

Use of substandard products: If you use waterproofing products that are not of the best quality, they will not last long and will result in seepage and leaks. They may also develop cracks and allow water to seep through over a period of time.

Improper application: Even if you use the best quality materials, but the application process is flawed, it can cause seepage and inefficient waterproofing. It is therefore essential that the guidelines listed along with the product are followed diligently.

Inefficient labour: Similarly, having access to the best quality materials does not guarantee complete waterproofing, if the products are not applied properly and the workers do a sloppy job. It is important that the applicators know their job and have sufficient experience in complete waterproofing solutions for bathrooms.

Insufficient coating: Some of the products need to be applied in several layers to ensure complete waterproofing, and if this is not done, it can become difficult to fix later on. Especially once tiles have been installed on the floor and the walls it can become very difficult to address the underlying waterproofing issue.

Insufficient priming and drying time: If the surface is inadequately prepared, the waterproofing materials may not adhere properly to it and cause issues later on. Also, each coat must dry completely to ensure greater adhesion and durability.

Improper drainage: If the slope of the floor in the bathroom is inefficient, it can cause water to collect in places and lead to seepage eventually. It is also essential that water used in bathrooms is drained out only through the pipes.

Following conventional waterproofing techniques: Conventionally, Brickbat Coba is used for wet areas waterproofing, but it acts as a reservoir of water and allows seepage through it to the lower floors.

All leak prone areas are not addressed: It is important to seal all four critical areas in a bathroom, which are floor bed, shower splash zone, sanitary fittings and nahani trap and drainage pipes.

The Dr. Fixit Bathseal range of products take care of all leak-prone areas of a bathroom like gaps around pipe inserts, nahani traps and sanitary wares, the sunken portion, splash zone and wall slab junction for efficient waterproofing.

Improper tiling: If the tiles are misaligned, and if the adhesives and sealants used are of poor quality, waterproofing is compromised.

Now that you know the common waterproofing mistakes in a bathroom, you can take care of them during the construction phase itself.
